Process

This is the most important page in our WebQuest. This page tells you every single thing you need to do in order to complete the WebQuest.

Step One: Where  does milk come from?

We all know that milk comes from cows. But have you ever stopped to think about what happens to it after that before it ends up at our house? There's a lot of things that have to happen first!

To find out a bit about how our milk is produced, please view the video on the website below. Remember to  write some  notes about the steps that are taken to produce  the milk, you will need them later!

From the Dairy to the Shop

Next, we need to learn some more detail!

View the following animations to see in detail how cows produce milk, as well as the details of the milk cycle.

Finally, each of you should download the following worksheet. You can choose to either complete the worksheet online and print it, or print and hand-write on it. Whichever form you choose, you should submit it to your teacher when it is complete, with your name on the top.

From Farm to Plate

Finally, each of you should speak to your teacher to see which group you are in. In your group, you need to work together to create a short powerpoint to show your peers what the steps of milk production are. Once you are done, you will present them to your classmates.

Step Two: How are eggs produced?

View the following video to see one way that chickens may be kept while they are producing eggs.

This is called 'free-range' because the chickens can move about in the open.  Another way that chickens can be kept is in small cages, with equipment to move their eggs. These are called 'battery hens'. The picture below shows how these hens are kept.

Why do you think farmers might choose to keep their chickens this way? Which way do you think is better? Write a short paragraph about your thoughts answering these two questions.

Once you have done that, it's time to learn about what happens after the farm. The following video is American, however, the process is very similar in Australia.

Finally, download the following document, print it and fill it in. Submit it to your teacher with your name on it.

This is the last step! Now that you know how milk and eggs are produced, it’s time to make your own food.

Talk to your teacher to find out who the other people in your group are.

The first thing you need to do is create a new food together. What animal produces is? Is that animal real or one that you have made up? Is it produced by a plant instead? Work together to make a poster of your food, including which animal or plant it is from, how it is harvested (is it a meat, is it milked like a cow, dug up or laid like an egg?) and how you eat it (raw or cooked, drink or eat). You can do this on paper or on the computer.

Next, you need to make a list of at least four steps your food must go through to reach the supermarket. Make sure you fully describe what happens, including where it happens and how it happens (is it done by a robot or a human, the farmer or a factory worker?). Include what resources you need, and the nutrients your food will have. Explain why they are important!

Finally, decide what form your final product will take. Will you make a slide show, a speech, a poster, a video or another presentation? Confirm your choice with your teacher first. When you are done, submit your poster and your chosen product to your teacher.

Step Four: How is your food produced?

Step Three: Nutrients We Need

So, now we have learned about HOW our food is produced. But do you know why it is so important for us to eat them? In this step, we will learn all about the important nutrients in our food, along with how they help us. Pay attention to this section, you will need this information for your final product!

Look at this website and make sure you look at all of the sections (see the right-hand side for the links).

Next, view the following video to learn more.

Finally, write a short paragraph explaining what the different food  groups are, and include some examples of foods that belong in each group. Remember to check out the video above for some hints.

Play this game to practice your new skills!
